Waihola District School is a full primary school (Yr 1-8) with generous, attractive learning spaces, inside and out. Nestled among native trees, it overlooks generous grounds, the lake and gentle rolling hills.
Waihola is located on the edge of the Taieri Plains, not far from Sinclair Wetlands. The school has a long history, dating back to 1859, one of the first schools in Otago.
Recently redesigned, our learning spaces, including two classrooms, a hall, library & central learning hub, allow greater collaboration & connection across the school. Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability are important parts of our school. Our outdoor education areas include raised vegetable gardens, a shade house, tunnel house and native garden.
Our committed, capable staff are supported by an interested and active community. Well-resourced, the school supports all children to "work and learn together to be the best that they can be".
Our school resources are well-used by the local community. Waihola District School provides a meeting place where all may be inspired and supported to become life-long learners.

Whānau Support
Whānau are warmly encouraged to come along and watch the performance at the Edgar Centre. It is always special for the children to have their families there to cheer them on.
We are very proud of the effort our students have put into preparing for this performance and are looking forward to celebrating their mahi with you. Thank you for your support in helping us get ready for this exciting event.
Ngā mihi nui,
Louise Crowl
Kia ora e te whānau,
At Waihola District School, we want to make sure the way we communicate with you is clear, timely, and useful. To help us with this, we are carrying out a short communication review.
We’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete our survey and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help us understand what’s working well and what we could improve, so that staying connected with school is as easy as possible for you and your whānau.
The survey should only take a few minutes, and your responses will be kept confidential. We will share a summary of the results with you once the review is complete.
Ngā mihi nui for your time and support – your voice makes a real difference.
Louise Crowl
Kia ora koutou,
We are excited to share that our long-awaited classroom upgrades will begin on September 1st. This is wonderful news for our school, though it does mean some changes around our spaces while the work is underway. We’ll keep you updated as things progress and ensure that health and safety remains a top priority for our students and whānau.
You may have noticed a skip has already arrived in preparation. Please remind your children to stay clear of it, as it is unsafe despite any “treasures” that might be inside. It is currently coned off for safety.
The upgrade will begin in Room 2 and the Resource Room, which is expected to take around 8 weeks, before moving into Room 1 (junior class) for a further 4 weeks. During this time:
The senior class will be based in the Hall. This will be the best working space while contractors are in the MLE area, where noise and activity could be disruptive.
Once the junior room is complete, the junior class will move into the newly upgraded senior space.
Looking ahead, we are also planning a classroom swap. With growing numbers and the needs of our junior class set to increase next year, this change will ensure both groups are well supported. After the upgrades, the spaces will be renamed to reflect our local bird life and our vision of safe, nurturing places for learning:
Room 1 → Rūma Kererū (Senior Space)
Room 2 → Rūma Tui (Junior Space)
The MLE → The Nest
We’re looking forward to these exciting changes and the opportunities they will bring for our tamariki. Thank you for your support as we navigate this transition together.
Ngā mihi nui,
Louise Crowl
